Is VR Technology the Future of Social Media?

As we become more and more isolated, communicating has never been easier. Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Discord, Zoom, are all helping us to keep connected with people around the world. But there is a new form that is starting to break out, VR social media.

What is VR?

Virtual Reality is a booming type of tech that involves putting on a headset of some sort and immersing yourself in a virtual world. There are lots of different types of VR. One of the more accessible options is the cheap headsets that allow you to slide your phone in to act as a screen. There aren’t many options for this type but it’s a good entry-level type of VR. The more popular form of VR is the gaming headsets like the Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift is actually what gives the idea of VR as a piece of technology for social media as Oculus was recently bought by Facebook. Unfortunately, these have a considerably large barrier to entry with you needing the expensive headset and a powerful PC to be able to support it. But if you do manage to get one, there are lots of uses for it. You can watch movies, play video games, go to virtual museums or exhibits, and of course, use it as a form of social media.

VR as Social Media

With a piece of technology like this that allows you to immerse yourself in a virtual world we are starting to see a similar world to that of the OASIS from ready player one and that is no more obvious as it is with VR Chat. VR Chat is a free piece of software you can install for your pc that acts as a social media network. You boot up the game and pick an avatar and are then placed into a virtual world with others with the game. You can talk to each other, interact, and even play a huge variety of games all with the headset on. As good as clients such as Zoom and Discord are at interacting with each other, VR provides a much more immersive experience. It’s the closest you can get to hanging out in person with your friends in a safe and remote way.

Another big future development is Facebooks next endeavor Facebook Horizon. The idea behind Facebook’s horizon is that it’s going to be a VR sandbox social media space. IT allows building worlds and games within it that you and your friends with Oculus headsets can explore together through VR.

There are also other types of more specific VR spaces such as Sports Bar VR which is, exactly as it says on the tin, a sports bar that you and your friends can visit together and play games like darts pool, and air hockey. It’s a good place to sit and talk and ask each other questions. Here’s another option for free questions about your friends in the form of That’s You. Putting it into VR has allowed for a full party atmosphere virtually.

Issues

The main issue with this being a new front for social media is accessibility. Although companies are working to provide portable headsets that don’t require loads of setup and technological know-how, VR is still a noticeably large investment for your average consumer. If VR is going to take off as a social media platform companies need to find a way to make it so the general public is able to get involved with it. It’s the same as when Mobile phones were becoming a big thing. Companies need to show the public that VR is unique enough to provide an experience that other forms of technology cannot. It also doesn’t help that because social media is so integrated into how we as a society communicate, find work and make friends that for VR to become the dominant form of social media consumption, society would need to buy into that concept and move how they operate over to a VR space as well.

In conclusion, although it will take time, I think that when more commercially available VR headsets become available, VR will have a massive chance at becoming the future for how we communicate as a society.

Why You Need to Invest in A Good Gaming Headset in 2021

One of the few positive things to arise in the last couple of months is the introduction of next-gen consoles. Play Station and Xbox both released the latest version of their console and along with this came the introduction of dozens of new games. Because of this, people have had to seriously upgrade their set up as not to fall behind everyone else. With so many new games available on the market now, people are going to be spending a lot of time gaming, especially with all of the free time we have all found ourselves having. Surprisingly, while we have all been upgrading our gaming stations, we have all found ourselves neglecting our headsets.

Though a headset is something that is used pretty much every day, it is a part of the gaming set up that is easy to forget about. Because of this, the quality of our gaming experiences may be being compromised without us even noticing. If that hasn’t sold you enough, here are some more reasons why you need to invest in a good headset in 2021.

Interaction

Over the last few months, we have been limited in the interaction that we have been able to have with our loved ones. One of the few ways that we have been able to ‘spend time’ with the people that we love is through playing games. A lot of us are guilty of never really having a gaming headset because who really needs to listen to abuse from preteens while you’re trying to unwind and play a couple of games. However, now that our friends and family are playing games, owning a good headset allows us to speak to them as we play games.

Comfort

As I have previously stated, with the introduction of so many new games it is likely that everyone will be spending a lot of time indoors playing games. Because of this, it is important to get a good gaming headset for comfort purposes. You may find with your old headsets, comfort was not really the main production focus. If you are someone that has experience with spending hours at a time playing games, you may be very aware of the pain that you may find yourself in as the hours go on due to a poorly padded earpiece. Sometimes, i sleep with my headphones on to block out noises from the busy streets, so finding a comfortable pair of headphones is key. Having comfortable headphones means you may also find yourself reaching for your headphones more for other uses such as listening to music or watching films, which means you will really be getting your money worth.

Quality

Let’s face it, there has been a vast improvement in audio technology in the last decade. Because of this, it is hard to understand why so many people are using headphones that are years old. With all of the new games on the market, you are really putting yourself at an immersive disadvantage by still operating on a low-quality audio system. Buying a new headset in 2021 will give you a vast improvement with the songs you listen to and the games you play. New headphones with better quality audio are also just much nicer to use and so once again you will find yourself reaching for them more.

Hygiene

Lastly, another reason that you should invest in a new headset this year is for hygiene purposes. When you use headsets, you are often using them for hours at a time which can lead to bacteria build-up, and let’s be honest, how often do you really clean your headset?

The 6 Best Simulator Games On the Market

Simulator games hold a special place in my heart. I have extremely fond memories of caring for and nourishing my Sims before I would accidentally burn down their home. But what is it about Simulator games that capture our interest so well? You could argue they are the ultimate form of escapism. The hallmark of a simulator is how grounded in realism it is. Unlike a fantasy or Sci-Fi game, Simulators let us experience something within our own world. So today we want to look at the six best Simulators currently on the market.

Sims 3

This one is an obvious inclusion. The ultimate simulator, Sims is one of the most popular games on the planet. But you might notice we have put down Sims 3 and not 4. That is because everything that was good about Sims 3 was removed in Sims 4. And everything bad and wrong with gaming today was implemented into Sims 4. So if you want to play Sims, just get Sims 3 and you will have a fantastic time.

American Truck Simulator

Have you ever dreamed about road tripping across the amazing American landscape? ATS lets you fulfill this dream while also giving you an accurate look at the life of a trucker. With a large number of ats mods further enhancing the experience, we cannot recommend this game enough. It also gives you a chance to play using a steering wheel attachment for full immersion. Pair it with a VR headset and you can fully immerse yourself into the world of trucking.

Anno 1800

A mix between an RTS and Simulator, Anno 1800 is a classic in the Anno series and one of the most realistic simulators of 18th-century life. Everything from managing your city and its population, to dealing with foreign trade and diplomacy. The games create an authentic experience as you are likely to get for this time period. If you are skeptical about the RTS elements, do not worry. They are not as demanding and hectic as games like StarCraft.

Cities: Skylines

The ultimate city building game. A title previously held by SimCity, until they went in an overly simple direction. Cities: Skylines offers players a fully immersive and in-depth city building experience. It allows you to manage everything from city planning right down to the traffic light systems. You can create the city of your dreams down to the smallest detail.

The game also has a number of excellent expansions, each adding something new and exciting to expand your possibilities.

Job Simulator

Job Simulator acted as a poster child for what VR technology was capable of. And it is one of the funniest games you will ever play. The gameplay is very simple. Pick an occupation and do a day’s work in that field. The challenge comes from using VR technology to navigate this world. It does a fantastic job of immersing you in the scenery. Just be careful you don’t mistake a VR chair for a real one and try to sit down.

Train Sim World

As a kid, I loved nothing more than playing with my wooden trains. As an adult, I have traded up to playing with virtual trains on a realistic train track. Train Sim World offers any Train aficionado the opportunity to run a realistic and fully immersive train service. Everything from running local stations, to managing a global shipping firm. Train Sim is THE definitive train simulator on the market. And it has enough expansions to make your head spin.

The Most Highly Anticipated Games of 2021

2021 is the first year of an entirely new gaming generation. The PS5 and the Xbox Series S are now out, despite some stock issues still persisting, the reviews are favorable. So now we look ahead to the most anticipated games set to be released in 2021. So let us dive straight into it and take a look at what is to come.

Hitman 3

Hitman is a household name for any gamer. With the signature barcode on the badling head of Agent 47 being a gaming icon, it is no wonder the series has survived this long. In 2016 IO Interactive did a soft-reboot of the Hitman franchise. The new installment was met with critical acclaim for its creative sandbox-style gameplay.

Now gamers are preparing for the ‘World of Assassination’ trilogy to wrap up with the launch of Hitman 3. There are big questions to be answered and creative assassinations to be carried out. The game launches in January so we do not have to wait long at all to get our hands on it.

GTA 5

But wait, GTA 5 is already out? Why is it on this list? That is a good question. And it is one we both do and don’t have an answer for. Rockstar games have been riding the coattails of GTA 5’s success for years now. We get rumors that they may be working on GTA 6, but until then we are forced to rebuy GTA 5.

But with this new generation of consoles now available, it is no wonder people are clamoring to re-buy GTA 5 in its new-gen form. And the fact you can get modded accounts for gta 5 means there are endless possibilities for your next playthrough. It is no wonder Rockstar has spent millions on re-advertising GTA on the next-gen consoles. But this does make us wonder if GTA 6 is actually happening, or is it stuck in development hell.

Halo Infinite

Halo fans are nothing if committed to their game series. Halo was once the most popular game on the planet. Breaking new ground in what an FPS game could be. But in recent years it is safe to say a lot of the magic of Halo has vanished. Replaced by Hollywood style dramatics and overtly sci-fi nonsense.

But Halo Infinite seems to be going back to what made the original Halo so incredible. We don’t know much about the game yet but from what we have seen it seems the style, setting, and even the color scheme are trying to harken back to the original Halo vibe.

Rumors have stated that the multiplayer scene is also being given an overhaul. The battle royal mode is being replaced with a large team battle. And the normal modes, such as deathmatch or king of the hill, are not being forgotten. The developers are promising an authentic multiplayer experience akin to the golden years.

How to Transform Your Gaming Setup into a Cyberpunk Dream

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of gaming’s most controversial new products. With reports of missing content, bugs and glitches around every corner, and general performance issues on every platform, CDPR has made it incredibly obvious that the game was not yet ready for release.

Despite all this, Cyberpunk is still a deeply immersive and exciting game that can easily eat up dozens and dozens of hours of your life before you realize any time has passed and keeps you yearning for more.

Whether you have just picked up Cyberpunk or if you are looking to grab it soon, you should know how to enhance your gaming experience in real life to make your adventure in Night City as brilliant as possible.

Platform

The absolute most important place to start is without a doubt the machine you are going to play on. At this point, it is common knowledge that the base Xbox One and PS4 can not handle Cyberpunk for more than a few minutes without something going catastrophically wrong. This big hit to accessibility is one of the hardest hurdles to overcome as these are the most common and cost-effective way to try the game out.

So what should I buy?

If you are incredibly lucky, you can always pick up a PS5 or Xbox Series X if you can find one for sale for a reasonable price in your area, as both of these consoles play the backward-compatible game with very few stability issues.

For the ideal experience, you will be wanting to build a mid-high end gaming rig fitted with at least a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti inside. This will ensure that Cyberpunk can show you the truly breath-taking detail CDPR prides itself on and will help improve the immersion ten-fold.

Display

So, you’ve grabbed some next-gen machinery to show off the might of Cyberpunk, but what’s the use without a brilliant screen? I would highly recommend getting hold of a 4K gaming monitor or a large 4K TV to make sure you get the most out of the game and the console you’re playing it on.

This might seem like a large extra slice of money to drop, but 4K is a step everyone should now be taking as it slips comfortably into general affordability. This worth is extremely evident in Cyberpunk where there is beautiful detail packed into every moving and static object in the game and you will not be left disappointed when you can see every slight movement in Keanu Reeve’s tightly detailed face.

Audio

Cyberpunk has a plethora of visceral sound effects and hundreds of original and licensed songs in its in-game radio stations. All of these and the hours upon hours of voice-acted dialogue make it an especially important game to make sure you optimize your audible experience. Luckily, high-quality headphones are far more attainable than ever. There are dozens of brands to choose from, but if you are looking for the Cyberpunk dream, there is some licensed gear you should look for!

SteelSeries

SteelSeries is offering its high-quality headphones in many styles and price points with officially licensed Cyberpunk skins. Whether you want the aesthetic of one of the game’s main gangs or the cool stylings of Johnny Silverhand, you can slip yourself right in with the themes of the game with fantastically useable and visually pleasing headphones to connect yourself with the world in an extra-special way.

Chair for comfort

Now that you are set up for your main playing experience, you might realize that you are going to be sitting in one spot for hours and hours, especially with more and more countries returning to a state of national lockdown.

The gaming chair market has boomed in the last few years through intelligently targeted Twitch sponsorships, so it has become extremely easy to find chairs designed to support your upper body and cushion your lower body over extended periods of time.

Everyone’s body is different, and I haven’t got a sponsorship of my own, so I won’t be recommending the latest GTRacing chair, but I will recommend having a detailed look for the bester Gaming Stuhl you can find. Just remember that it is always worth spending a little more than you think you should on a piece of furniture you will be using for huge parts of your year.

Lights, gaming, action!

Last on the list for anyone with a few bucks leftover from their budget is some mood lighting. It might seem extravagant, but a great gaming setup can be greatly improved by a good place LED light strips and smart lamps. It is often understated how much difference ambient lighting can make to your gaming experience, and it’s hard to describe until you try it, so I highly recommend grabbing some LEDs from Amazon and letting your creativity enhance your day!

Has PC Gaming Finally Been Toppled By Console Gaming?

In the past few years consoles have taken the gaming world by storm, with some honorable mentions being the release of the Nintendo Switch in early 2020, and then the PS5 coming out at the end of the year and selling out almost instantly. The specs and accessibility of these consoles are constantly improving, and it does leave some questioning where PC gaming stands if it still stands at all. So let’s take some factors into account and see.

Console Releases

Every few years there tends to be a new console release, and each new release brings big changes from the last generation of consoles. It is only speculation on what the next generation will bring after the release of the PS5 and the quality it has brought to the market, as well as the Xbox One X series. For PC gaming, however, there is never a full console to be released, rather you have parts you can buy to set up and improve your console. Of course, there are Gaming setups you can already buy, but these are not tailored to your needs and the games specs you might personally need. Building and upgrading a PC can get very expensive as well, although the PS5 is the most expensive console of this brand at £449.99 ($499.99), which is the exact same price as the latest Xbox console. Although this is expensive, you get everything you need for the console in one, apart from the games. For PC, the latest graphics card released costs £1749.99, and that is just one component needed to build a whole gaming PC.

Games

With each new console that is released, there seem to be new games to go with it. The PS4 saw the revival of Crash Bandicoot, the Nintendo Switch brought a new Animal Crossing that brought millions of people together all over the world. However, this does give PC gaming the advantage, as there is no lost data or games with each new release, as you can just upgrade different parts of your setup and keep the old parts with the data on it. This is something that consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation are only just introducing with their digital copy of games, and even fully digitalized version of their consoles. Consoles also tend to come with a guarantee of certain games, as they don’t have the same range available to them that PC gaming does, so when a game is released for a console that does well, such as Call of Duty or God of war, the brand will offer them a contract to keep pushing out more games. You also have to consider what you can do with the games on each platform. Both platforms offer multiplayer and online versions, as well as single-player or story-mode games, but PC also allows you to play across multiple different accounts from one console for games such as Rise of Kingdoms. For console games, you can only be logged in to one account at a time, and when you log out of that account, you can’t access the game data connected to that account. But for Pc, you can play multiple accounts by using Rise of Kingdoms PC version which can help you to increase your score rapidly.

Specs

With the progression of technology there has been a massive progression in quality when it comes to games, just compare the likes of PS1 games such as Metal Gear to PS5 games such as Demon’s Souls. Graphics, sound quality, voice acting, and levels have all improved drastically over the years, but a Pc is more versatile in that when a new graphics card is released, you can update your software with it almost immediately (depending on if your other components can run it). For the console, the graphics you buy at the start, are the graphics you will still have by the time the next console comes out, whether that is three or five years later. However, the quality for new consoles are always the best they can be, and this certainly rings true for PlayStation’s and Xbox’s latest releases and can only leave fans speculating what the next consoles will be like when they are released. Not only that, but the consoles will be able to run any games that are released for them as these games are made for the specs of the console, but for PC gaming the newest big names in games, such as The Witcher series, makes its games for the best specs it can, so if your hardware is old, then you won’t be able to play any new games until you update it, which can be expensive as mentioned before.

Considering all this, it is hard to judge whether or not PC gaming has been toppled by console gaming, as they both individually have their pros and cons, and it is down more to your own preferences, and how much you are willing to pay for it. But the new consoles from PlayStation and Xbox certainly are good competitors to PC and will continue to be so in the future.

Is Cyberpunk Going to Have Full Mod Support?

Take your mind back to 2012. A huge year for gaming. Massive titles such as Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect 3 finally released. New titles such as Dishonoured came in and left their mark on gaming history. Xcom was rebooted with startling success and Blizzard was still riding high with the release of Diablo 3.

But something else happened in 2012. Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced. That’s right, eight years before its eventual release, we got the first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk. And while this trailer had no gameplay hints in it and was a far cry from the eventual state of the mood of the game, it got people excited none the less.

And this hype continued right up until its release. Despite setbacks, massive changes to the game, and a rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is now out and playable. But the big question now is this: Will Cyberpunk have full Mod Support?

Modding

It is no secret that as fun as any game can be, it is much better when the player can take control and change it. We know esp cheats for cod black ops makes the game more fun. Fallout 4 is a much better game with a slew of mods installed. And Sims isn’t Sims without the Motherlode cheat.

Now the truth is that nearly every game in existence can realistically be modded with enough time and effort by the modding community. But this is assuming the game provides no inbuilt mod support.

As it stands right now, the modding community is hard at work trying to create a modding platform that works with the Cyberpunk engine. And all reports say they are making fantastic strides. But so far the mods that are available are limited and basic.

The rumors suggest that CDPR is working on creating full mod support for the PC version of the game, along with the Xbox version. But chances are we won’t see working mod support for the PlayStation anytime soon, given the track record of difficulty with modding on the PS4.

Is It Needed?

Another question we have been looking at is: Does Cyberpunk need mod support? And if so how badly?

The answer is a resounding Yes and Immediately. Chances are you will have seen the disastrous fallout of the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Already dealing with numerous delays, the launch was hit with a scandal that cost CDPR a lot of stock value and potential legal action. With the current generation version of the game running in an essentially unplayable state. Sony even went as far as to remove the game from their store and most companies offered full refunds to anyone who wanted one.

So the modding community has their work cut out for them with this title. This wouldn’t be the first time a game has been salvaged by the hard work of the modding community. Not to mention the game itself, even when playable, was seemingly not what people expected. A lot of people were hoping for a Deux Ex style RPG, gritty and hardcore. Instead, we got a Borderlands style game with a Cyberpunk skin and soft RPG elements.

Hopeful

We never like to count a game out too early. No Mans Sky managed to pull it around and become one of the best titles out there. We are hopeful that Cyberpunk is simply going through a rough patch that will be sorted before long. Night City needs you still. So don’t turn your back on it just yet.
