BLAME!: Cyberpunk CG Anime Coming Soon!

Blame screen capture

Kovacs in a thread in the Meatspace Forums pointed to Twitch’s find that at the Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF), it was announced that a plan to adapt Tsutomu Nihei’s cyberpunk manga BLAME! into a CG animated movie is already underway.

The production will be handled by Micott and Basara, the same company responsible for the making of Appleseed Ex Machina. Production I.G is also involved for working on the background. Only a small picture is revealed as shown at the left of this post.

A promotional DVD will be release this summer. No word yet on the release date.

While the CG was generally top quality, hopefully more care is spent on the story for Blame! than was spent on the 2004 Appleseed movie.

With any luck it won’t end up a glorified music video like Appleseed was. As much fun as those sorts of anime can be it still detracts from plot, characters…etc when all that’s focused on is graphics.

Fingers crossed for a good result.

DO NOT WANT! CG fails.

Nihei himself chose the CGI technique over the traditional one used in the internet short films. I read the manga series many times and imo cgi is the right tool for the translation of Nihei’s surreal architecture from manga to the big screen.

The whole thing about BLAME! as a manga, is that the focused art style was black and white, and great way to for comics to be displayed. Take sin city for example, CG may be a hundred times cleaner, but keep in mind its a completely different style. in a way its not fair to compare it to the Black/white. Both meduims have redeeming qualities. I myself am not a huge CG fan, and i rather liked the art style to the mini dvd cibo log thing, but im still going to be open about BLAME!

As long as it’s not as messy as the “internet episodes”.. God, those were only interesting for the scenery, and there’s quite a lot of that in the manga..
Some coherency, a lot of action and a feeling of vastness and this movie is going to be great!
I’m a big fan of animation in general, from clay to CG, as long as they don’t make everything look like plastic, as in the older CG Appleseed..

PAtirck @ 7:41 pm:

you know, i never found the internet episodes, any one want to tell me where i could find them? via email if possible?

CG scares me… You have to be very careful with this masterpiece and CG is not the best way of doing this… but let’s hope they don’t do a mess this time.
BTW, the anime was great, no matter how incoherent it was,,, it was supposed to be just for people who read the manga anyway

BLAME! has got to be my favorite Manga, so a full-length movie is going to be awesome for me. I do prefer high quality rendered anime to even the best CG but if they do a job like the Final Fantasy movies or the PS2-onwards Armored Core openings, it should be pretty good.

Insomanic @ 4:51 am:

Well, I can’t imagine Nihei’s ridiculously textured art transferring well into 3D… Rather than simply trying to imitate the style, I hope they focus more on portraying the same mood, the same sense of space…

Goumiliov Le Kuskoy @ 7:24 pm:

If they could create a space like Texhnolyze’s one, it should be awesome. But I’m afraid of something : how the very long pages of silence and comtemplation in the manga could be render in 3D… ? I mean, without wasted it, of course.

PAtrick @ 1:18 am:

EXACTLY.
Nihei, I wonder hes ever done any 3d rendering…

project_2501 @ 6:35 pm:

totally agree with the texhnolyze comment. I think texhnolyze and serial experiments lain have shown that silence and contemplation can be very effective in anime. However, I really don’t thnk cg is the best way to do this. I think traditional animation would convey the dinginess and darkness of the manga much more effectively (having said that i’ve only read volume 1 so i’m not that informed…) cg is just too clean, shiny and exact. imo a mix of visuals from texhnolyze, lain and ergo proxy would work well

patrick @ 2:41 pm:

CG is very clean looking
as opposed to his traditional style of balck and white.

However, CG deserves a chance, I saw Appleseed, and I thought it was okay, the animation was fantastic though.
Nihei, did the cover and one section the “Halo Graphic Novel”
Nihei being a diehard fan of halo, was definitely influenced by halo while making blame. His section in the graphic novel wasnt so black and white, but full of colour. I think cg will work great. Its a very different style.

ionreflex @ 3:41 pm:

IMHO, the story of Blame! is not accessible for the commons… hell, even I don’t make sense of half the concepts! So we’re talking about a potentially not successful blockbuster…

I don’t know what’s less expensive - CG or traditionnal - but Blame! as a full lenght feature - if the mastermind is Nihei himself - will be worth the trip, I’m pretty sure of it.

End of line.

Theres a video preview out now! Go look!
As a Diehard fan…I Think it looks worthy.

It looks like a video game… quite ugly… this is a bad new.

Ak!mbo @ 12:32 pm:

That was rather terrible, really..
Here I’d gone and gotten my hopes up.

Rakol @ 10:15 pm:

I’m actually not that disappointed, I wasn’t expecting much and plus it was what I pictured it to look like. Hell, I’m surprised they even attempted to make a CG flick of “Blame!”.

October 28, 2007

ionreflex @ 9:55 pm:

Totally with you Rakol : you can’t expect mega budget with something as strange and out of this world! Hell, probably not a single one Big-Shot reviewer will be able to understand it…

I just hope at least one theater around here will show it…

DanBrk @ 9:06 pm:

Appleseed was a master piece, what an amazing movie, with excellent characters an blowing mind graphics. i dont know what do you expect, but theres nothing wrong with good music in an movie, helps keep the excitement up. well the plot was kind of repetitive.. but… the goal of a movie its make you pass a nice time, and i think tha appleseed makes that an a lot more… reminds me of sweet alita..

Mr. No 1 @ 5:04 pm:

I am a huge fan of Nihei and I don’t understand how they pretend to make a proper Blame! film using CG. It just does not work, you only have to look at the manga, it’s not possible to put that in CG.
I really hope the bit I watched on YouTube was just a fan-made thing, because it looked disgraceful…
