I think they'd have to spend a lot of money for a live action remake to be anywhere near as good.

This sounds as farfetched and never-going-to-happen as the live action Battle Angel Alita (Alternatively Gunnm / Gun Dream) movie. And the full 3D animated Battle Angel feature..
But they'd all be hell'a cool!

Wow. Talk about mized feelings on this. I have a hard time thinking they'll do this well. Just imagine how shitty it would be if we get a low-budget T&A rip off movie of this...

OK, let's get to it, then: who do you think should play whom?
I, for one, can't simply grasp the idea of ANYONE embodying some of my most fave characters of all time  . I'd rather see 1 more GITS SAC installment like the last one, than 10 live-action movies.

I kind of find myself in the odd position that, while I’m not really a hardcore GitS fan I’ve ended up watching pretty much all of the anime for ‘research’. There are bits that I like (overall plotting, production design) and bits that disappoint me (the action, Motoko bugs me) so I’m not going to loose sleep over a lousy GitS adaptation.
Still, one should have a bit of faith that Production I.G. won’t sell out the property to the first studio with a briefcase of cash. I’d be curious to see how much of the deal they’d broker and control. The guys who made Natural City, for example had great visuals and cinematography but a lacklustre script.
I for one would like to see Neill Blomkamp, the guy they had on hand for the Halo adaptation, direct an Asian film crew. If you haven’t seen Tetra Vaal or Alive In Joburg do so now (should be on YouTube) and you’ll know what I mean; the guy does great ‘urban fantastic’. Added to the dream team I’d snag the production design (costumes, props, sets) behind the Underworld series.

Makes me think of bethesta buying the fallout license, they ruined the concept...
But isn't a (shitty) remake better than a slow abandon?

Yeah, Ron Perlman would make an awesome Batou. He's got the distinctive look for it, and if the character goes to a more Oshii, kind of thoughtful and laconic style, or a more S.A.C feel with more of the humour, Perlman could probably pull it off.
Of course, I'm a fan of Perlman, so I'm a little biased.
To be honest though, the only director who I think could make the movie work is James Cameron, though I'm sure that's been said before.

Considering Cameron has got Battle Angel Alita on his hands, this probably won't happen, but I agree - Cameron would be great. Ridley Scott would be wonderful as well.
