Duke University Medical Center have created a weaving machine to repair cartilage. The machine weaves a fabric "scaffold" that has the same properties as cartilage, but stem cells can be introduced into it and made to grow throughout the fabric to replace it.
They are looking to start trials in three to four years. I hope my knees can hold out till then.
After attacking the root DNS servers, now they're attacking the anti-phishing site CastleCops.com. Sooner or later, these asswipes (the attackers) are going to attack the wrong site, as the admin knows a thing or two about hacking himself. He's going to find them and ruin their lives and reputations.

Laptops and their always insufficient batteries...
Last nite, I had that wicked idea...
Why do companies not develop laptops, that have solar-cells on their outside-shell ?
The cover/shell of a laptop is big enough to contain loads of solar-cells. They could then be used, to slowly recharge the internal battery pack, when the laptop is not used.
would be very handy, when there is no power-source nearby to recharge your laptop.
In combination with a low-power consuming chipset, this would be the holy grail for all those people who hate their laps battery packs that only last 2 - 3 hours.
PS: Remember the solar-powered calculators of the 80s... _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and The Corporation

UNiX systems going haywire on 2035/2039.
Unix systems use 32bit to calculate date+time. when they get to the year 2035+beyound, their date starts to 0 again. And that would make loads of UNIX servers start to malfunction.
Currently there is a migration started to convert the software to 64bit, but the old software-modules that are always on the system, are hard to edit, because no source-code/documentation is left after so many years...
Might be a bigger problem as the Y2K problem. _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and The Corporation

From the "Top reasons why lawsuits need to be abolished" files: A Vietnam veteran is suing IBM after being fired for visiting adult chat rooms at work. He claims "age discrimination" for his dismissal, but the real reason may be violating company net-surfing policy.

I once heard a rumor that a South African company was working on a laptop with a clockwork generator. Anyone else heard of this? _________________

Greets, Urshanabi, and welcome to Cyberpunk Review.
I did a web search for "clockwork generator" and found some old news stories (circa 1999) about the hand-cranked generators. They were going to be used to power the $100 laptops for the One Laptop per Child project to get every child in poorer countries a laptop computer for education. Unfortunately, they have switched to AC power, citing the cranks as impractical.
It sounded like a great idea at the time, but about the only use I've seen or heard for them is for flashlights from some outdoor gear company.

I am looking since ages for this gear: (PS: IF anybody knows a company who sells this, i would be very happy to know about):
- A Java based machine that can play only java/cellphone games.
I have bought a GSM/mobile phone last month , and enjoy uploading new java games to the phone with my serial cable. But the phone has only 15MB memory.
Are there any pocket game-consoles, that have the ability to upload plain Java MDP 2.0 or other mobile games.
My idea of such a console/machine would be :
- a simple machine with color screen, flashmemory (about 512MB or 1gig), some gamepad included and an usb-port.
such a machine would cost less than $50 and would be great for kids to have the ability to play games from the huge collection of java-games available on the net for GSMs/mobile phones.
Anybody knows about such a game-device, that can play java-games ? (not a GSM...) _________________ Greetings from Stormtrooper of Death, member of the High Tech Team, Duty of Thelema, Knights of the Holy Grail,Eindhoven Punk Squad (EPS) , DV8, the Dream Team and The Corporation

I'm not sure if this counts as Cyberpunk news, but I'm treating it as such because it involves imprisoning someone for an act accomplished through the internet not done of their free will.

The skinny is that this substitute teacher, who doesn't know the first thing about computer security, has been convicted of showing pornographic material to children. The culprit is malicious software that she didn't even know was on the computer.
The only thing she did wrong, in my opinion, was to leave the classroom without turning the computer. Mitigating circumstances are that she was going to get help and she was too afraid of messing up the computer to do anything with it (like turn it off -- dumb I know, but some people are really like that).
I worry about rulings like this, because I have seen first hand someone go to prison for child pornography that he neither willingly received nor looked at. However, it was on his computer, so he took the fall for it. On my site I hypothesize that a hacker with an axe to grind could have someone put into prison by planting such images on their machine.

replace { with [
{url=the_url}the text that you wish to display for the link{/url}
it's quite similar to HTML, but I find it a lot easier
