SFAM we need to make a second topic that focuses on the neural, chemical and biological enhancements being developed for the human body. We can still post them in here, but we can also have a second topic that focuses specifically on those advancements.

Like the "neural extention cord" post i made earlier

Maybe a "Transhumanism News" type topic? Sounds good. Go for it!

A U.N. panel of scientists have concluded that humans are responsible for global warming. These people have way too much free time... and taxpayer money... to do a study to reach such an obvious conclusion, especially when they could have done something about the problem. Rolling Eyes

Now, tech news:

A new type of robot is coming in March for around $200 US. You can use it with a digital camera to create panoramic digital images that can be used in virtual tours.

For those in the U.S., daylight savings time is going to start in March, not April. Some are predicting problems with systems not ready for the earlier change. Any time-dependent systems (like flight scheduling) may be impacted.

OK, I WANT that camera thing. That looks too cool!

But regarding the earth thing, I was thrilled to see that study come out. When you have 131 countries all saying the same thing, the debate on whether this is real just has to end. Even the Bush administration now agrees with this. The question then is whether we as a population have the fortitude to do anything about it. This is both an individual and country-wide decision.

I hate it when people talk about a problem but do nothing about it. We need some serious action is we're going to stop the global warming.

I want snow!

We just had snow in the Baltimore area; Just enough to make commuting a problem. It melted away already, but they're calling for more this coming week, plus it will be below freezing all week so it should stick around for a while. If it comes and sticks, I'll try to get some pix to post... just in case.

From the "History repeats for those who do not study it" department, the Veterans Administration proved they learned nothing about data security from the earlier loss of a laptop with personal information on it by now reporting a portable hard drive unit with personal information on it was lost late January.

Okay, tech heads, it's monday which means I've got a lot of time to spare and a lot of fellow students to kill violently. Maybe you'll get to read abouts it here..

News!

Nanotech engine, go!
One step closer to making nanomachines, apparently.
In older "news" scientists used nanomachines to move a drop of water up a slope. Slightly newer news, nanomachines where used to replace a blind hamsters damaged optical nerve and the little critter can see again!
As a drummer I find nanotech drum kit pickups way fucking cool!

Our pollution of space is showing effects and there's a ring of space debris slowly developing around Earth.
I say "Fuck yeah!", I always wanted a ring around the planet anyways! PLanet rings are dead cool, simple as that.
Of course, equatorial space launches will be a little risky..

Anonymous grow even anonymouser.

Police helmets fitted with audio/video recording gear. Pretty soon, we'll have cops running around in Jin Roh style hemlets!

Yahoo is about to compete with google ads.
Hoo-fucking-ray. As if google monitoring my habits wasn't bad enough..
This kind of stuff really reveals how much we're being monitored theough new tech..

Google Earth gets blurred by public government demand.

More on nanotech. Nano is definitly going to make itself heard during the new era of technology and research, nanotech will open so many doors in surveilance, cosmetics and computing.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev asks Bill Gates and company to show mercy for teacher who had, apparently unknowingly, violated Microsoft's licensing agreement.

ZDNet's Roland Piquepaille has a couple of blogs of research that can affect biotechnology. First, Duke University chemists discover that electrons travel through proteins like urban commuters.

Next, we discover that it only takes one picosecond (1E-12) for UV to damage DNA. Something to think about while working on your tan.

Ever wonder if Bill Gates secretly wants M$ to fail? Vista, the "most secure version of Windows," is only one week old and already there are problems with its anti-virus and firewall. Now Gates is daring people to exploit Vista. Maybe he should change his name to "Elmer FUD." Heh heh heh heh.

MIT succeeds in putting optics on a silicon chip. They predict that optic chips will be in demand in five years.

Breaking news on the hacker front:

DNS servers were targeted in an apparent DoS attack earlier today. There are 13 "root" DNS servers that help translate site names like "cyberpunkreview.com" to an IP address, but servers run by the US Department of Defense and ICANN seem to be the main targets of this attack.

The attack failed to crash the servers or any part of the Internet, though slowdowns were reported. A similar DoS attack occurred in 2002 also failed due to the distributed nature of the Internet.

Honestly, I'd be freaked to the point of stupidity if actual hackers (as opposed to script kiddies) ever tried to attack cyberpunkreview. If there's one site you think they'd be happy leaving alone...

Here's the latest Big Brother news: New York senator Carl Krueger wants to ban pedestrians from using iPods and similar devices. He's an obvious sellout to the SUV-drivers-who-chat-away-on-cellphones special interest group.

At the RSA security conference, there's a new handheld called Silica that can hack into WiFi networks. The makers of Silica, Immunity Inc., have been filling orders for law enforcement and government agencies, but it won't be long before we hear of these "tools" being used as "weapons" by hackers... or Big Brother.

Ever wish you can do more with an iPod than listen to music or watch videos? There's a utility that can turn your iPod media player into a Mac OS X diagnostic and repair tool. Now if they can do the same for Windows and Linux...

Canadian nuclear safety site defaced with photos of nuke explosions. Kovacs, you might want to consider staying in Syracuse as a permanent resident.

With biotechnology advancing rapidly, one question will eventually need to be answered: Which protein is better, natural or artificial?

Haha!
Hackers rule sometimes.
This just shows how much power they actually possess and how much they could fuck stuff up, but they chose to just deface the website and leave everything else be.
