I need to cool off my head in my rage against my computer..
I'll kick back and post some techy news.

Police bribe crooks with X-boxes if they promise to turn in their guns.
(Larger weapons are replaced by computers.)

Japanese mass suicide site leads to death sentance.

You might want to reconcider bringing your tech on the road...

Today, in '79, Rhode Island was this close to becoming another Chernobyl.

"Shotspotter", a network of hidden microphones picks up gunshots around town to alert police.
I wonder if that's all they listen in on...

UK Government has neglected nanotech.
In the words of Nelson: "Ha-ha!"
However, the neglect seems to lie on the safety precausions when dealing with "nanomaterials"..

There's now more money put into web-ads than brickspace paper ads.

Didn't they make a movie of the Three Mile Island incident back in the 80's? I'm pretty sure I saw a movie like that about a near meltdown accident while a TV crew was inside the facilities.

Edit: 2 seconds on Wikipedia and I found the answer, the movie is The China Syndrome and it is actually the other way around. The movie was released in 1979, and a few days later the TMI incident happens.

Quote:
the Three Mile Island disaster in Pennsylvania coincided with the film's release. In the film, a physicist says that the China Synrome would render "an area the size of Pennsylvania" permanently uninhabitable.

How freaky is that?!

I'm pretty sure this is allready illigal in australia, you can get pretty hefty fines for using phones in cars (unless you're using some sort of hands free system). I quite agree, holding a phone to your ear is bad enough, but sending a message...at least with a phone to your ear you can see the road

Shudder

I was living in Syracuse, NY at the time and thought we'd be facing fallout from TMI. Fortunately, TMI didn't go Chernobyl, though Chernobyl did.

Some good news from the biometric front: Canadian based Bioscrypt plans to release a 3D face-recognition camera later this year. The camera is expected to sell for $350, $200 when production ramps up.

I've heard of people having their asses handed to them, but a dossier about themselves? Wired's Fred Vogelstein got one, courtesy of MicroSoft.

EEEK!... Hide the children-bots! He's bringing the Jesus Juice!

A Virginia Government computer leaves personal data open for Google's spiders.

A new type of chain-mail smart fabric could be used to power personal gadgets, or have embedded systems within.

Ever wonder if you could use your senses in ways nature didn't plan on? Like tasting colors, or navigating with your nose? Check out Wired Magazine's article Mixed Feelings and see what researchers are doing to make it possible.

Also, check Wired's interview with Lee Gutkind as he pimps his book about roboticists who are devoted to making robots "Almost Human."

That reminds me of an article on somethingawful.com.
A guy pretends to be a girl on WoW to get people to give him stuff. After they do he breaks up with them in some hilarious ways.

Albert Einstein, famed physicist, Nobel award winner, overall genius,... rebel? The latest issue of Wired magazine has an essay by Walter Isaacson about how Einstein's rebellious streak made him into the genius he was.

Einstein a rebel. Certainly gives cyberpunks a reason to cheer. At least, it would explain this:

This is a riot. Perhaps this is a generational thing, but I'm still amazed that people can so totally immerse themselves emotionally into someone they've never met. The idea that true love is devoid of interaction of the body really is a sign of our post-human future. That being said, it's doesn't exactly have a high degree of success for long term happiness.

But the bit about masturbating to elf blood elf pictures at the Burger King is what really got me! Doh!

Yeah there's some really cool stuff at TED Talks. Just plug in 'tedtalks' into youtube and see some cutting edge ideas.

You'd think they would black out Fred Vogelstein's mobile phone number....

Quite a bit going on today. First, two from ZDNet...

JavaScript based hacker's toy Jitko has been leaked. Mr. Hoffman, Jitko's creator, wasn't careful enough during his demo, someone got the source's URL, and now... Shudder

They can bioengineer a heart piece by piece. Will they be able to do whole replacement hearts in the near future? Stay tuned...

Now for Wired's stuff...

An MIT researcher is going to try to teach a robot to talk by learning how babies learn to talk.

Believe it or don't: There's a trade group for spooks called the Intelligence and National Security Alliance Here's a direct link to the group's site.

Check out the vid of Tempbot.

Almost missed this (it got buried from the day's news on ZDNet):

Porn star Ron Jeremy now has a show online called "Techsmart with Ron Jeremy." His show... and other stuff... can be found on http://www.heavy.com/

I'll spare everyone the jokes about how much RAM and Hard Drive you'll need for his stuff.
