V'Ger definitely brings up certain CP themes, as do the Borg. It's too bad it's takes over 2hours of driving to find Vger in the 1st film.

Yes, the film is really extremely slow. (Because of this, many fans frequently call the film "The Slow Motion Picture".) Nevertheless, personally, I think TMP is one of the most amazing Star Trek Movies. Especcially the "take off" of the Enterprise in Space Dock and some of the interiors of the ship, e.g. the landing bay are among the most interesting visual effects of all Star Trek Films.
I agree that the Star Trek plots with the Borg contain cyberpunk themes, too.

The korean film "I'm a Cyborg but that's OK" is also partly cyberpunk related although the cyberpunk elements in the movie are mostly only delusions of a severely mental ill woman. I think the main thematic and some of the visuals are indeed very cyberpunk.

Today, I found the following tailer of the japanese Movie Tokyo Gore Police on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bNuHJmtTpQ (Note: The Trailer contains a few violent scenes, but they are not as extreme as some other scenes of the movie.)
Many scenes of it looked very cyberpunk. Especially the Guy with the huge rocket launcher. (Most of the backgrounds shown in the Trailer looked very cyberpunk, too. )
The story sounded quite Biopunk and there is a privatization of law enforcement, where the police becomes a part of a corporation.
Can this movie be considered Cyberpunk or at least cyberpunk related?

Looks interesting.
Corporatization of police is definitely an element of cyberpunk, although it appears to only go that far.
I'd still like to check it out. _________________ Picasa-Wordpress-dART

Yes, from what I heard about the movie, it sounded like it's mostly a standart mad scientist story with Cyberpunk elements and not like a very innovative cyberpunk story, but from the visual side, it really looks extremely interesting.

I watched it the other night. I took it as a comedy - it's not a film to take seriously, most certainly. Some of the editing styles were interesting, some cliche. _________________ Picasa-Wordpress-dART

From what I saw of the film, I absolutely agree.
Some of the "fake commercials" were truly extremely macabre, but also very funny. (I really like black humour. )

I guess you could look at this in two ways:]
1) Privatisation of police services is bad (as the big businesses gain even more control)
or
2) Privatisation of police services is good, as it moves towards an anarcho society, where people engage police services in a more voluntary fashion (a la some of Neal Stephenson's settings) _________________ Check out my debut PUNK HORROR novel, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS....

On this site, it's often mentioned that The Borg Episodes of Star Trek have got a high degree of Cyberpunk Themes.
I think the Episode 11001001 ( http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/11001001_(episode) ) of Star Trek: The Next Generation also contained many cyberpunk elements. In this Episode, a species of Cyborgs appears which is connected and completely dependant on their planets central computer, but this computer will shut down in the future, threatening the survival of the whole species. So, while they help the Enterprise with some computer problems, they hack the computer and use the hack to highjack the Enterprise.

The Anime "The Asylum Session" sounded very cyberpunk to me, to.
It's a movie about an abandoned stadium which is used by homeless people and Punks as a home. Some of them are Cyborgs. At one day, the police tries to throw the people out of the stadium to be able to destroy the stadium, but the Punks start to fight the police to prevent it.

Maybe "Wallstreet"? You know, the ruthless corporate financial struggle. What can money do to a man, etc. "Memento" would be a good example of a drugged/re-wired mind gone astray. Then, there's "Cube" (still gotta see #2 and #0) - corporate experiments, eh? Or a crazy version of cyberspace, in which you die, die again and then die some more
Basically, any drug-related movie with some meaning can be discussed, too. Addictions, in general - man escaping from himself in one or another way. Is "Existenz" cyberpunkish?
I am also trying to come up with a movie that would showcase the affection a man has for a machine without being a comedy, but that's totally hard atm. |
You're trying to think of a movie where man has an affection for a machine and is not a comedy?
Perhaps: The Bicentennial Man? I mean, it's not a comedy and the people that had the android really loved him, they even treated him as a family member. That's such a sad movie...

What about the Anime OVA Afro Samurai?
know, some elements like Cybertechnology are definitely present but it's basically a typical Jidai Geiki Series with some Cyberpunk Elements. So, I am not sure about that.
